Chapter Forty-One

The attendant led us up to the second floor, down a long hallway of dark wood walls and marble floors to a private booth. Our guards followed behind, taking up position on either side of the door. Honestly, I’d forgotten all about them, which was probably an issue. I needed to be able to recognize my own bodyguards in a heartbeat. I’d have to fix that tomorrow.

Walking through the door, I found myself in a private booth overlooking the main floor. There was one chair in the room and it was designed for Lagron’s width. Hell, the back of it was carved with a trident superimposed over two waves, which was probably the symbol of the Riverlord.

All the opera chairs on the main floor had been removed, so people could dance. On the left side, I saw a raised platform with a throne on it, but no one was sitting there right now.

I could hear people milling about, and an orchestra was warming up. Sitting down in my chair, I could see other bigwigs sitting in their seats. Corine, I mean Bunny, stood on my left, looking a bit lost.

“Sit on my lap, Bunny.”

Instantly she sat down on my knees, ramrod stiff. Her dress rode all the way up to her panties, giving me a sliver of a peek… which I loved. Laying my hand on her leg, I absently ran the tip of my thumb over the edge of the fabric, making her shiver. Her dark brown eyes looked up at mine with a dangerous darkness rippling to life behind them. For the first time, she felt pretty and glamorous… and desired.

“Well, fatty,” an asshole to my left announced. “I see that you’re trying out girls now… But girls are supposed to have tits. Are you trying to transition to women, or is that a boy in a dress?”

Bunny withered on my lap like a dying plant.

The asshole was middle-aged with gray along his temples. He was wearing a suit with an emerald as big as my thumb for a stickpin. The mouthy asshole screamed old money, which was probably why he had a blonde on either side of him with tits bigger than their heads.

Bunny leaned against me. “He’s the Lord of the Docks.”

I don’t care who he is. No one talks about Corine like that.

“I mean,” the man said, digging a deeper hole. “You’ve heard the old adage. If you put lipstick on a pig, she’s still a pig, not a lady. That applies to women who look like boys. She’s still not a lady, old chap… or maybe even a woman. Do you enjoy fucking her ass? It seems a bit flat to me.”

Unclipping my leash from around her neck, I said, “Stay here. I’ll take care of this.”

Slipping her onto the chair, I walked out my balcony door, wrapping her leash around my hand. It was an expensive dog chain that made a wonderful, impromptu weapon.

Unlike me, the Lord of the Docks didn’t have any bruisers standing outside his door.
